GitHub Repositories as AI training data

A private GitHub organization is more than a folder of source files. It records how your team planned work in Issues, argued through trade-offs in pull request reviews, automated checks in GitHub Actions and shipped through tagged Releases. Momentra helps companies assess whether that history qualifies as training data for AI coding models and, if it does, license or sell it under a signed agreement.

Can GitHub Repositories be used as AI training data?

Yes. Private GitHub repositories can be licensed or sold as AI training data when the company owns the code. Pull request review threads, Issues linked to pull requests and GitHub Actions run results add value beyond a plain git clone. Client-owned or restricted third-party code is scoped out, and contributor emails and committed API keys are scrubbed.

No files needed upfront. We sign an NDA before reviewing any sample.

What can be included

You choose the scope. These are the parts of GitHub Repositories that are typically most useful.

  • ✓Repository source code across branches, with full git history and tags
  • ✓Pull requests with diffs, review comments, suggested changes and approval states
  • ✓GitHub Issues with labels, milestones, assignees and linked pull requests
  • ✓GitHub Actions workflow files (.github/workflows/*.yml) and run results
  • ✓Discussions threads where design questions were debated and answered
  • ✓Releases and changelogs tied to specific tags and merged pull requests
  • ✓Repository docs such as README, CONTRIBUTING, CODEOWNERS and wiki pages

Why AI labs value it

Issue-to-merge chains

On GitHub, a bug report often links to the pull request that closed it, which links to the commits, review threads and Actions runs that verified it. That full chain from stated objective to passing checks is the kind of example AI coding agents struggle to find in public code.

Review conversations with outcomes

Inline review comments, "suggested changes" blocks and the follow-up commits that addressed them show how senior engineers reason about code quality. Models can learn not only what the final code looks like but why it changed.

Real CI signals

Actions logs show which tests failed, which matrix builds broke and what fix made them green again. These pass/fail outcomes give models a verifiable signal instead of guesswork about whether code works.

Code that never went public

Most open-source code on GitHub is already widely available. Private repositories for internal tools, business logic and domain-specific systems are far scarcer, which is a large part of why qualifying private repos may be of interest to AI developers.

How it is scoped, exported and anonymized

01

Choose repositories and date ranges

You decide which repos, forks and archived projects are in scope. Repos containing client-owned code, vendored third-party code under restrictive licenses or anything you are contractually barred from sharing should be excluded or cleared first.

02

Export beyond git clone

A plain clone captures commits but not Issues, pull request reviews, Discussions or Actions history. These are typically pulled through the GitHub REST or GraphQL APIs or an organization migration archive, after the NDA is signed and transfer terms are agreed.

03

Scrub secrets and identities

Committed API keys, .env files, Actions secrets referenced in logs, contributor emails and usernames in comments are detected and removed or replaced with purpose-built tools. Customer data that leaked into fixtures or issue bodies is handled the same way.

How a partnership begins

01 / CONTACT

Share Basic Information

Share only your contact, company, industry, and partnership interests—no raw data required.

02 / DISCOVER

Initial Value Assessment

We discuss the data type, completeness, scarcity, and the tasks it could support.

03 / PROTECT

Define the NDA and Boundaries

Before reviewing any sample, we define confidentiality, permitted use, retention, and security requirements.

04 / PARTNER

Receive an Offer and Begin the Partnership

We provide a purchase proposal and contract, then support de-identification and secure data transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to give Momentra access to my GitHub organization?
Not at the start. The first steps only need your contact details and a description of what you hold. Any access or export happens later, after an NDA defines confidentiality, permitted use, retention and security, and only for the repositories you choose.
Are archived or abandoned repositories worth anything?
They can be. An archived repo with a long commit history, closed Issues and reviewed pull requests may still show complete engineering workflows. Value depends on completeness and scarcity, which is what the initial assessment looks at.
What about open-source forks inside our organization?
Public forks usually add little because the upstream code is already available, and their licenses may carry obligations. The focus is normally on private work, though your own changes on top of a fork can still be relevant.
Will the buyer see our GitHub usernames and emails?
The aim is that they don't. Usernames, commit author emails and names in comments are part of what gets de-identified before further use, under the terms set in the signed agreement.
