Figma Design Files as AI training data

A real Figma file shows how a product interface came to be: early wireframes, component libraries, prototype flows and comment threads where designers and engineers argued about details. Models that generate or understand UI need this structured design history, not just screenshots. Momentra helps product teams and studios assess whether their files could be licensed.

Can Figma Design Files be used as AI training data?

Figma design files can be used as AI training data for models that generate or understand UI. Design system libraries with variables and component documentation, prototype flows, and comment threads with version history are the strongest assets. Mockups are checked for real customer names and screenshots, and stock photos, paid UI kits and commercial fonts are excluded or flagged.

No files needed upfront. We sign an NDA before reviewing any sample.

What can be included

You choose the scope. These are the parts of Figma Design Files that are typically most useful.

  • ✓Design files with frames, components, variants and auto layout settings
  • ✓Design system libraries: variables, colour and type styles, and component documentation
  • ✓Prototype flows with interactions, overlays and transitions
  • ✓Comment threads with feedback and resolutions
  • ✓Version history and branches showing iterations
  • ✓Dev Mode annotations and handoff specs
  • ✓FigJam boards for user journeys, workshops and flow mapping

Why AI labs value it

Structured UI, not pixels

Figma's file data describes layers, constraints and components as a tree. That structure is closer to how interfaces are built in code than an image is.

Design paired with code

When a design file can be matched to the front-end repository that implemented it, the pair shows how a design became working UI. Few public datasets connect the two.

Critique and iteration

Comments and versions show what changed after feedback. That helps models learn what designers consider a better solution.

How it is scoped, exported and anonymized

01

Export with the REST API

File JSON, rendered frames, comments and version metadata can be exported through Figma's REST API, so structure is kept rather than only images.

02

Look for real data in mockups

Mockups often contain pasted production screenshots, real customer names or avatars of real people. These are found and replaced.

03

Check third-party assets

Stock photos, licensed icon sets, paid UI kits and commercial fonts carry their own licence terms. They are excluded or flagged so only your own work is included.

How a partnership begins

01 / CONTACT

Share Basic Information

Share only your contact, company, industry, and partnership interests—no raw data required.

02 / DISCOVER

Initial Value Assessment

We discuss the data type, completeness, scarcity, and the tasks it could support.

03 / PROTECT

Define the NDA and Boundaries

Before reviewing any sample, we define confidentiality, permitted use, retention, and security requirements.

04 / PARTNER

Receive an Offer and Begin the Partnership

We provide a purchase proposal and contract, then support de-identification and secure data transfer.

Frequently asked questions

We are a design agency. Can we include client projects?
Usually only with the client's permission, because most agency contracts assign design IP to the client. Internal projects and your own design system are separate.
Do only finished designs count?
No. Messy exploration files and abandoned directions can be as useful as final screens, because they show the process.
Should we include the matching code?
If you own both, linking files to the repository can add value. It is optional and can be discussed during the value assessment.
Does Figma need to approve this?
Your designs are your own work, but you should review your agreements. Figma is named descriptively; Momentra has no official partnership with Figma.
