GitLab Repositories as AI training data

Teams that run on GitLab often keep their entire delivery process in one place: issues and epics for planning, merge requests for review, .gitlab-ci.yml pipelines for testing and deployment, and environments for release tracking. That end-to-end record is what makes some GitLab instances interesting for AI training. Momentra assesses whether your groups and projects qualify and supports a licensing or sale agreement if they do.

Can GitLab Repositories be used as AI training data?

GitLab repositories may qualify as AI training data because they keep planning, review and delivery in one place. Merge requests with review threads, .gitlab-ci.yml pipelines with job logs, and issues and epics are the most valuable parts. Scoping by group or subgroup keeps client delivery projects out, and CI job logs are cleaned of exposed hostnames and tokens.

No files needed upfront. We sign an NDA before reviewing any sample.

What can be included

You choose the scope. These are the parts of GitLab Repositories that are typically most useful.

  • ✓Project repositories with branches, tags and full commit history
  • ✓Merge requests with discussion threads, resolved/unresolved review notes and approval rules
  • ✓.gitlab-ci.yml definitions, pipeline runs, job logs and artifacts metadata
  • ✓Issues, epics and milestones, including issue board labels and weights
  • ✓Environments and deployment history linked to specific pipelines
  • ✓Project wikis and snippets maintained alongside the code

Why AI labs value it

Planning to deployment in one system

Because GitLab links epics to issues, issues to merge requests and merge requests to pipelines and deployments, the whole path from requirement to production can often be reconstructed. That continuity is rare in public datasets.

Threaded review that resolves

GitLab merge request discussions are marked resolved when addressed, so it is clear which feedback led to which change. This gives models a cleaner picture of review-and-fix cycles.

Pipeline outcomes as ground truth

Stage-by-stage job logs show where builds, tests or security scans failed and what commit fixed them. Verifiable pass/fail results are useful for training and evaluating coding agents.

How it is scoped, exported and anonymized

01

Self-managed versus GitLab.com

Self-managed instances can usually be exported with project export files or the GitLab API, while GitLab.com groups rely on the API and group/project export features. The method is agreed after the NDA, based on what your team is comfortable with.

02

Scope by group and subgroup

GitLab's group hierarchy makes it practical to include, for example, one product's subgroup while leaving out client delivery projects. Client-owned code may need the client's permission or must be excluded.

03

Clean CI variables and logs

Masked CI/CD variables are not exported as values, but job logs, deploy scripts and registry references can still expose hostnames, tokens or internal URLs. These are detected and removed or replaced alongside author names and emails.

How a partnership begins

01 / CONTACT

Share Basic Information

Share only your contact, company, industry, and partnership interests—no raw data required.

02 / DISCOVER

Initial Value Assessment

We discuss the data type, completeness, scarcity, and the tasks it could support.

03 / PROTECT

Define the NDA and Boundaries

Before reviewing any sample, we define confidentiality, permitted use, retention, and security requirements.

04 / PARTNER

Receive an Offer and Begin the Partnership

We provide a purchase proposal and contract, then support de-identification and secure data transfer.

Frequently asked questions

We run a self-managed GitLab behind a firewall. Can this still work?
Yes, nothing has to be exposed at the start. If the assessment shows promise and an NDA is signed, the export and secure transfer method is agreed with you, and you decide what leaves your environment.
Do epics and issue boards matter, or just code?
They matter. Epics and issues explain the objective behind a merge request, which is part of what makes a workflow complete. Code without that context is usually less valuable.
We are on the free tier without epics. Is our data still useful?
Possibly. Issues, merge requests and pipelines alone can still capture complete engineering workflows. The assessment looks at what you actually have rather than which tier you pay for.
Can container registry images be included?
Usually the focus is on code, reviews and pipeline records rather than built images. Whether anything else is in scope is something you decide and the agreement records.
